Director of Biosecurity Vanuatu Timothy Tumukon reveals that total kava exports for 2015 were valued at just Vt 180 million because of Cyclone Pam. However, in the year following Cyclone Pam, kava export sales soared to Vt 800 million. Monday was the second anniversary of Cyclone Pam’s destruction. Government is helping farmers to plant the best noble varieties for their areas and the rules for product preparation for the international market are being taught.

The Iata versus Hocten Supreme Court case required a payment of Vt 10 million for persons swindled by one Michael Hocten (a family name that has been in the news again more recently) to pay some ten million vatu a decade ago. Not one vatu has yet been received by those owed.

Cuba and Vanuatu have been engaged seriously in more ways than just the training of ni-Vanuatu doctors to keep ni-Vanuatu healthy. The death of the Cuba’s premier statesman, Fidel Castro, and his assistance during the independence struggles of Vanuatu have been acknowledged by Vanuatu’s former PM Barak Sope as the news of the Cuban leader’s passing is heard around the world. Sope and Castro were indeed friends back in the 1970s, and Cuba’s support for Vanuatu at the UN Decolonisation Committee was greatly appreciated here.
